Popularity Data Update: What's Changed in Your SEO Tools

announcements Aug 19, 2026

As you may know, TPT popularity data is still not populating. Now that TPT has released its new Keyword Finder tool, our team is actively evaluating the available data to determine how we can best incorporate it into our SEO Tools.

In the meantime, we're using historical data to estimate keyword demand so we want to share a bit more on how that works, what it means for each metric and tool, and how to keep making smart keyword decisions right now.

How the Historical Estimate Works

Since real-time popularity data isn't available, we're now using past years' popularity data to estimate current demand. In simple terms: we look at how a keyword performed during this same period in previous years, and use that as a stand-in for today's numbers. This gives you a helpful sense of direction.

What This Means for Your Dashboard Metrics

  • Avg Popularity — now based on previous years' data for the selected period, like Last 7 Days, if that historical data is available for that keyword.
  • Current Popularity — now based on the previous years' data for yesterday's date.
  • Market Size Range — still shows the minimum and maximum of yearly demand, but it won't include any brand-new highs a keyword may have reached since July 29.
  • Popularity Trend Lines (in Keyword Galaxy and Keyword Finder) — still show trends from previous years (if available), but is not showing current daily trends.

Tool-by-Tool Breakdown

🔭 Keyword Galaxy Popularity metrics are estimates based on historical data, but Page 1 Difficulty and Page 1 Average Price are still updating normally.
🔍 Keyword Finder Still generates keyword suggestions based on the root words you submit. (→ See how to refresh / submit root words here)
Popularity metrics are estimates, but Page 1 Difficulty and Average Price are still updating.
📅 Keyword Planner Completely unaffected. It runs on long-term historical data, so nothing has changed here.
📈 Rank Tracker Still tracking your keyword rankings as usual, but the popularity metrics like Current Popularity are based on historical data as outlined above.
✨ Optimizer You can still confidently use its top keyword suggestions to update titles and use the Success Tracker to review changes in rankings and keywords.

Recommendations for Getting the Most Value

  • Treat popularity numbers as a guide, not a rule. They're meant to give you a general sense of historical demand and direction — take them with a grain of salt rather than as an exact number.
  • Use the Seasonal and Month filters in Keyword Galaxy — they still surface top keywords for specific time periods.
  • Lean on Page 1 Difficulty and Market Size Range together to evaluate whether a keyword is worth targeting.

What's Next

We're continuing to evaluate all available data sources within TPT, including Search Analytics and the newly launched TPT Keyword Finder.

Now that it's live, our engineering team is actively exploring how to leverage the Keyword Finder data into your SEO Tools. We will share a timeline as soon as we have one, but rest assured our goal is to incorporate these new insights as seamlessly and quickly as possible.

We'll keep you updated as things evolve!
